Having been fortunate to have done two other apartments in this prestigious block, my new clients contacted me to offer our turnkey service for their new coastline property. Built on the rock face of the iconic Chapmans Peak Drive, this apartment block boasts some of the most spectacular views across Hout Bay and Suikerbossie

The brief

Our brief was to entirely recreate this space and to give it the feeling of a sophisticated spa. Soothing, uncluttered, understated luxury, featuring the ocean, were key to driving all the design elements.

The design and the build

As our title suggests, and being inspired by our magnificently natural surroundings, we decided to lose the existing sharp geometric lines and outdated poky, narrow passageways, to create a magnificent feature curved wall that cleverly meandered around two strategic columns that structurally were required to remain.

This design offering, together with all the finishes and décor , ultimately reflect a perfect balance of their relaxed and elegant & easy lifestyle, without opulence, but with an overall welcoming, expansive and soothing appeal.

Affectionately known as our ‘’cello wall’. This allowed for an expansive flow throughout, whilst defining the living spaces on both sides. Dining and living on the one, with the bedrooms and bathrooms on the other.

Before and After

Enclosing the existing balcony with a series of frameless glass sliding doors and balustrade allowed for an integrated and more inclusive approach to the flow of the internal living and entertainment areas.

We created a more generous kitchen by adding a new working scullery kitchen, featuring contemporary lines that effortlessly flow into and better connect with the dining, living and bedroom spaces.

Before and After

Before and After

We lost all the narrow passageways and boxy rooms and favoured a lovely entrance lobby leading to a generous opening to the guest wing of the apartment.

With all the walls gone, the newly defined bedroom wing now houses a large open plan master bedroom en suite, with a dressing room; with the guest bedroom also being en suite. Our design also allowed for a generously beautiful guest WC.

Surround sound, air con and the all important invertor, were all cleverly designed to be housed in the curved ceiling bulkheads and the kitchen cabinetry.

An extension of the build flowed seamlessly into an eclectic mix of all the finishes; the procurement of the ambient wall and pendant lighting all manufactured by some of our best local designers, the bespoke cabinetry we designed was executed beautifully with our fabricators. Each piece being unique from the curved hard wood vanities, the live edge console, to the side tables and all the remaining bedroom, curved slatted wall and kitchen cabinetry.

The custom made sofa for the lounge was made to fit perfectly into the curve of the wall whilst bench seating was built into the length of the wall where the frameless stacking glass doors were housed.

The burnished coppers, brushed stainless steel and rose gold of the hardware contrasting with the shades of green is repeated in the accent wall coverings and the soft furnishings adding to the overall warmth and calm of this magnificent transformation.

What Our Clients Say

Michael & Busi are pleased to offer this review on the project that Mint Designer Renovations led by Ms. Sue Lloyd-Roberts, did for us. Sue and her team of experienced and talented in-house and contracted professionals did an extraordinary job with the apartment, far beyond our expectations. We go below into some details as to what that entailed.

Our very first impression was that Sue paid keen attention to the details of what we wanted the apartment to look like. Sometimes we would naturally be unsure or lack the vocabulary to describe what we had in mind. She was always on hand to help us articulate our requirements before she could offer her own ideas. We wanted our apartment to be uniquely luxurious without being ostentatious, be welcoming and exude serenity in every room. For the bathrooms, we wanted one to feel like one is in a high-end spa. We are experiencing it.

In the design of the new space, Sue and her team offered out-of-the-box ideas on how our basic vision could be realized. Rather than offering a simple renovation, they reimagined the various elements of the space, and conceived a new architecture that gave the apartment a new definition. From three ordinary bedrooms to two luxurious suites. From a standard kitchen with all the appliances exposed and in one crowded place, they gave us a new (and unexpected) food preparation island with full cabinetry and accessories. The entrance to the main living area is grand, inviting and beautifully finished, with views of the bay and the Atlantic Ocean possessing an irresistible gravitation pull. The main bathroom is a masterpiece of luxury, health and peace. We love it. Every room tells it own tale written on parchments of creativity laid bare by Sue and her team.

Sue kept us fully informed throughout the project, especially when major changes were needed. We were engaged. She delivered the completed project on time and on budget.
