The design brief

What an exciting opportunity to be entrusted with our third renovation on the iconic Chapmans Peak Drive. We needed to maximise its potential to create a more expansive flow throughout, whilst transforming the entire unit into a light and uncluttered living space that together with all the finishes and décor, would reflect a perfect balance of our client’s relaxed lifestyle.
From the design phase through to completion of the build, we conducted the entire project long distance between the Uk and Cape-Town without the need for our clients to visit.

Pivotal to the design elements were to offer a sense of  ‘sophisticated Africa’ when entering the apartment. Understated, clean lines with a neutral palette from Farrow & Ball UK, compliment the finishes with the light grey cementitious floors throughout. The tall white skirting and frameless, seamless floor to ceiling doors add height and a natural elegance to the new bedroom wing. And the new ceilings with bulkheads and shadow lines further enhance this streamlined finish.

The upgrade also included air con and TV’s in the bedrooms and entertainment area. An inverter and battery backup system were also included into the cabinetry design.

Given the entirely new layout, the clients’ artwork was repositioned along with some of their furniture and objet.

The existing shutters and blinds remained and were reworked into the new spaces.

All the before photo’s can be viewed at end of this project.

The open plan Entrance into the kitchen now allows for storage for shoes, together with the inverter discreetly housed within the new cabinetry. The design factored in the necessity for ventilation, with the front door receiving a new look.

The Living area – In the design offering we opened the living spaces by losing the existing bedroom that backed onto the lounge.

Whilst renovating we discovered the floors were completely uneven. An entirely new levelled screed had to be done in preparation for the installation of the cementitious flooring throughout.

The cabinetry included the newly designed and manufactured TV unit.

The two columns that structurally needed to remain, were panelled out to house books and some of the clients’ art pieces.

As with all the finishes, we sourced the new wall lights and pendants.  A generous bespoke sofa was fabricated to compliment the proportions of the new expansive lounge.

The Kitchen – The existing formal dining room gave way to become the new kitchen, laundry and scullery. A clever use of design that allowed us to steal space from the old adjoining bathroom.

The all-new open plan kitchen with its neutral yet warm palette and fine finishes now offers an effortless and accessible way to cook, entertain and relax.

The Dining area – Moved from what became the new kitchen,  now sits pride of place in front of the ocean. Simple, unobtrusive pendant and wall lighting complete the serenity of this newly defined space.

The Study – The existing kitchen gave way to become the study and a new third bedroom.

Offering a queen sized murphy bed with stylish panelling, visible when closed and includes an entirely new workspace.

Our Farrow & Ball palette picks up the gorgeous green, reminiscent in the rock face of Chapmans Peak itself.

Main Bedroom – The Main bedroom needed to be entirely remodelled to have the orientation of the bed facing the ocean, with more generous built in cupboards and a built in headboard and bed base.

The Main en suite bathroom was designed to be more compact and contemporary and needed to include both a bath and shower.

A clean, calm finish with a high level glazed section between the bathroom and bedroom, allows for natural light to permeate the space.

|

Guest Bedroom – this space offers new built-in cupboards, a dramatic headboard that extends the length of the king-sized bed, with the continued bulkhead ceiling and lighting detail.

Guest Bathroom – This newly defined space follows the theme of the monochromatic palette offset with shades present in the iconic rock face, including a toilet, vanity & shower.

All the newly designed spaces now create an effortless flow, whilst maximising the view and achieving a cohesive design ‘language’ throughout.
